Snapshots From The Borders (Season 2)

Voices of people for which “border” became an existential experience. “Citizen journalism” (also participatory journalism or grassroots journalism) empowers those who live at the grassroots level of society and ask the questions from there. The series is a cooperation between Radio Helsinki and Südwind Steiermark.

“Snapshots from the Borders” - the voices from the borders

E-Mail us:

How to engage when the border and uncertainty become existence? When arrival remains threatened by deportation? When the experience of “being different” becomes an imposed identity? When being a “fellow human being” is denied? What remains of life, on the border? This is what we talk about in “Snapshots from the Border”.

People who have experienced how war, violence, persecution or poverty have brought them to the limits of the bearable, the reasonable. Uncertain how and whether they survive. Uncertain whether they will fail at national borders. To be sent back. Uncertain how they will arrive and where. Uncertain what the future will bring, because life can no longer be planned, but is entirely dependent on decisions made by the authorities. Uncertain whether the commitment will be worthwhile: Learning new languages, finding new jobs, making new relationships, arriving in new places, going through court cases and going through bureaucratic processes.

We are people who are commonly called migrants and asylum seekers. We do not want to “stay among ourselves” and we also cross this border in the form of dialogue with society, politics, the economy, social and cultural life.

The project informs European citizens that migration is a complex, multidimensional phenomenon and a political issue that requires efforts and concrete actions by people and organisations/networks at all levels of society.

Citizen Journalism

“Citizen journalism” (also participatory journalism or grassroots journalism) empowers those who live at the grassroots level of society and ask the questions from there. Through radio as a “borderless medium” we address an international audience with country-specific problems.

In 2019, nine interviews with activists were conducted for Snapshots from the Border. This year, people with experience of flight and migration ask the questions themselves.

Participate

We invite citizens to become journalists themselves, to participate in our project and to report about their experiences in migration, education, politics, social justice, work or everyday life in Graz. We want to overcome discrimination through resistance and self-empowerment.

The Team

We are now Favour, Gea, Joseph, Regina, Saif, Vanessa and Walther. If you would like to get to know us, have a topic for us or give us feedback, then you can reach us by e-mail:

Radio Helsinki

Radio Helsinki, the Free Radio Graz, operates an advertising-free and socio-politically active radio station with open access on the 92.6 MHz frequency which can be received in the greater Graz area.

The 270 programme makers regularly produce 150 programmes in 12 different languages. Radio Helsinki is one of 14 free radio stations in Austria.

Snapshots From The Borders (Season 2)

“Snapshots from the Borders” aims to improve the critical understanding of European, national and local decision-makers and public opinion on global issues in order to achieve the objectives of the SDGs, in particular SDGs 1, 5, 10, 11 and 16. In particular, the project aims to strengthen a new horizontal, active network between municipalities and cities directly involved in migration at the EU borders in order to promote more effective policy coherence at all levels (European, national, local).

“Snapshots From The Borders” is a three-year project co-funded by the European Union and carried out by 35 partners, border municipalities and cities and civil society organisations. Project Leader is the Comune di Lampedusa e Linosa.

The production of this series is being created in cooperation with Südwind Steiermark and is financed by the Snapshots from the borders project. Snapshots From The Borders is a project co-financed by the European Union and the Austrian Development Agency.
